What does BMI mean?
Body mass index (BMI) is an estimate of body fat based on your height and weight. It indirectly measures body fat using an equation to give an approximate value. BMI can help determine whether a person is at an unhealthy or healthy weight.
High BMI indicates too much body fat, whereas a low BMI can be a sign of too little fat on the body. A person with a high BMI increases their chances of developing certain serious conditions, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. A very low BMI can also cause health problems, including bone loss, decreased immune function, and anaemia.
What is the normal BMI for Adults?
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH): A BMI of less than 18.5 means that a person is underweight. A BMI of between 18.5 and 24.9 is ideal. A BMI of between 25 and 29.9 is overweight.
Adults who are 20 and older can interpret their BMI based on the following standard weight categories. These are the same for both men and women of all ages:
BMI | Weight Status |
Below 18.5 | Underweight |
18.5 – 24.9 | Normal |
25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight |
30.0 and above | Obese |
How do you calculate BMI manually / What is BMI Calculation?
Body Mass Index is a simple calculation using a person’s height and weight. It is calculated by dividing a person’s weight by the square of their height.
The formula is BMI = kg/m2 where kg is a person’s weight in kilograms and m2 is their height in metres squared.
Is 26 BMI good or bad?
A BMI of 26 falls within the Overweight category (25.0 – 29.9)
Why is BMI bad?
BMI might not be a good indicator of health for several reasons.
Even though some health professionals use BMI to categorize individuals based on body fat, it doesn’t actually take body fat or lean body mass into account. This means BMI doesn’t recognize the difference between muscle and fat.
For this reason, BMI may categorize someone with a high percentage of muscle mass as having excess weight or obese, even if they have low body fat levels.
BMI doesn’t take body fat or lean body mass into account. It also doesn’t consider where fat is stored on the body. Because of these issues, it may provide misleading health information for some people.
What is ideal BMI for females?
A “normal” BMI for women ranges from 18.5–24.9. However, BMI is not an accurate measure of obesity in many people. It tends not to be a good indicator in postmenopausal women and athletes.
